Hanging artwork to maximum effect in your home

Artwork is an essential component of any well-designed home. Your artwork sets the tone of a room, adds colour, and provides a visual focal point that adds interest to your room. Getting the placement of your artwork can be tricky but is crucial piece of the puzzel to ensure that it complements the design of the room and enhances the overall aesthetic. Let’s explore the importance of correct artwork placement and how to achieve it.

Firstly, correct artwork placement can enhance the visual appeal of your home. Artwork can add depth and dimension to a room, making it feel more welcoming and comfortable. Placing artwork on the right wall and at the correct height can make a significant difference to the overall effect. You should also consider the size of the artwork and the space available to ensure that it does not overpower the room or feel too small.

Secondly, artwork placement can help to create a cohesive theme throughout your home. If you have a specific style or theme that you want to achieve, artwork can help to tie everything together. For example, if you have a coastal theme in your home, placing artwork featuring seascapes or beach scenes can help to create a cohesive look and feel.

So, how can you achieve correct artwork placement in your home? These are the key steps I follow when I am specifying artwork for homes:

One: Determine the right size: The size of the artwork should be proportional to the size of the wall and the furniture in the room. If you have a large wall, consider placing a larger piece of artwork, or several smaller pieces arranged in a gallery wall. Your art should take up 60-75% of your wall area. So start by measuring the width and height of your wall and multiply them both by 0.60 and 0.75. This will give you the minimum to maximum size range for your art piece of pieces.

Two: Consider the height: The centre of the artwork should be at eye level, which is around 145-160 centimetres from the floor. If the artwork is above a piece of furniture, leave 10-20 centimetres of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork. When hanging artwork above furniture such as a sofa, aim for the bottom of the artwork to be 15-30 centimetres above the top of the sofa.

Three: Create a gallery wall: A gallery wall is a great way to display a collection of artwork or photographs. To create a cohesive look, use frames that are the same colour or style, or mix and match frames for a more eclectic look. Frame spacing should be 5-10 centimetres apart.

Four: Consider the lighting: Lighting is essential to showcase your artwork correctly. If possible, place your artwork in natural light, but not direct sunlight or the sun will damage them. You could add lighting specifically designed to highlight artwork.

Five: You can choose to centre your artwork above furniture or you can place artwork off centre and play with composition by balancing the art with a tall plant or wall shelves.

Correct artwork placement is essential to enhance the overall look and feel of your home. By considering the size, height, lighting, and placement in relation to furniture, you can create a cohesive and visually appealing space that showcases your artwork to its full potential.
