My top kitchen design tips

Modern Organic Kitchen - created using Style Source Book

We all know kitchens are the heart of the home, they are the place that people congregate to when you are hosting. They are the place that many family memories are made. Your kitchen should be as much a functional space as it is a beautiful timeless space within your home. Kitchens do not come cheap so if you are renovating or designing your new kitchen keep reading for my top kitchen design tips.

ONE. Sink or swim

Your kitchen island is the centre piece of your kitchen. By removing the sink from your island it reduces the clutter and mess often found around sink areas and opens up many more uses for your island. It can act as a second eating area in your home, a serving area during a function, or a homework station for the kids. The options can be endless with the uses, but my favourite is the island bench being the serving area when you are hosting.

TWO. To cabinet or not

If you have the luxury of a large kitchen and butlers pantry, loose the upper cabinetry. This creates an openness in your kitchen and a less utilitarian feel. Replace your upper cabinets with a single shelf to display and hold everyday staples. You will also have room for wall scones and artwork which I love seeing in kitchens. In saying this though, if you have a small kitchen and or limited on space within your home storage will always come out on top.

THREE. Tile or stone

No more glass splash backs please! Tiles add so much more interest to your kitchen. You can get creative with pattern and colour. For a different look continue your stone bench top up into your splash-back. This creates a seamless look and suits both classic and contemporary kitchen styles.

FOUR. Considered hardware choice

Hardware (handles) for your kitchen is like the icing on a cake. It’s that finishing touch, and shouldn’t be overlooked. Hardware is not only a practical item but it can also be very beautiful. There are loads of options and metal finishes so make sure you look around at the options. My favourite is brushed nickel, it has a warmth to it that stainless steal is lacking.

FIVE. Integrated appliances

Hiding those appliances and creating a seamless look in your kitchen can elevate your kitchen and take it to the next level.

SIX. Boiling, Chilled & Sparking water on tap

Literally convenience on tap! Put the jug away, now you can have it all with a tap that gives you instant boiling water, filtered chilled water and even sparking water straight from the tap. A luxury for sure but if your budget allows it’s a very practical addition to your kitchen.

So there you have it, my top six design tips for kitchens.
